Goal 15:How do we guide them? 30Goals Challenge
The topic of discussion around the Global Crisis of HIV and AIDS is difficult. It becomes even more difficult when you add the need to have this discussion in our public and private school settings. The stigmas are huge, but the dangers to our students, of being ill-informed, are even bigger.
My son Jason is experiencing first hand, how difficult the discussions really are, working in Florida as a patient advocate for The AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Set aside 10 minutes and listen to why Jason and I are passionate about the need for educators to inform themselves and guide their students in discussions about this life threatening disease. Then check out this excellent resource on AIDS Education & Young People: http://www.avert.org/aids-young-people.htm. Thank you forlistening.
(Sadly this video interview with my son was lost when Wetoku was deleted from the web in late 2011)

However, here is a recent video that highlights his work in this field:

Goal: Educate yourself about the Global HIV crisis. What will you have to change to become a better guide…even when it comes to sharing important, provocative, topics? How will you do it? Share it with a colleague.
Quote: “A little reflection will show us that every belief, even the simplest and most fundamental, goes beyond experience when regarded as a guide to our actions.”~William Kingdon Clifford
Challenge: 1) Join The Teacher Mentoring Project on The EduPLN. 2) Support new teachers at Edutopia.org by responding to their questions and concerns. 3) List what you believe are the characteristics of a guide. What does a guide do? What will you have to change to become a better guide?
